Updated: Jul 23

If you’re looking to understand what’s being built nearby, check the status of a project, or research past approvals, Dorset Council’s planning application portal is a useful public tool.

This guide will show you how to search for live or historic planning applications online.

Step 1: Start with a Google Search

  1. Go to Google and type:

  2. search planning applications Dorset

  3. This will bring up Dorset Council’s official planning search tool.

  4. Alternatively, you can go directly to their planning search page using this link:

Step 2: Use the Address or Postcode Search

Once on the planning search page, you will see several options to search.

  • To find a specific application, use the Address/Location or Postcode fields.

  • If you are looking for a particular property:

  • Start by entering the postcode

  • If that doesn’t return the result you expect, try using a house name, road name, or a nearby address

Sometimes properties are recorded under older names or alternative spellings

Step 3: Browse the Search Results

After entering your search, a list of matching applications will appear.

  • Click on an application to view more details, including:

  • The status of the application (e.g. submitted, approved, refused)

  • The description of proposed works

  • Key dates and decision history

  • Public documents such as plans, reports, and design statements

  • You can also browse recently submitted or decided applications by week or month.

Step 4: Use the Information

The planning portal can be useful for:

  • Checking what has been built or approved near your home

  • Finding inspiration or precedent for your own project

  • Reviewing decisions and officer comments

  • Tracking the status of your own application

  • Submitting comments on live applications

  • It’s a valuable research tool for homeowners, neighbours, buyers, and professionals alike.
